Imagine this: star-filled skies, laughter around a crackling campfire, relaxed camping by a desert lake, and magical memories of a New Year’s Eve celebration with fireworks among the sand dunes. Celebrate the joy of life and the start of a new year beneath millions of shimmering stars. Let the desert’s unique. A good sense of humour, flexibility, and a willingness to let go of comfort are essential – and so is the ability to go without mobile signal for three days (photos can be posted later!). On your return, you’ll explore the rugged mountain landscapes around Matmata and immerse yourself in Berber culture.

Arrival
Flight from Luxembourg to Djerba (Luxair, 16:15–18:55). Upon arrival, your driver will greet you and transfer you to your hotel (approx. 40 minutes). (D)

Into the Desert
From Djerba, you’ll drive to Matmata to meet our local team and fellow desert travelers. Over a traditional lunch, you’ll get to know each other before heading into the Sand Sea. After a short stop in Douz, the gateway to the desert, the off-road journey continues through sand tracks and dunes. You’ll settle into your cozy tents at Camp Abdelmoula and gather by the campfire. Dinner is served under the stars, followed by a restful night in tents with thick mattresses and private bathrooms. (B,L,D)

To Lake Houidhate
After breakfast, the off-road journey continues through breathtaking desert landscapes and the vast dunes of the “Grand Erg Oriental” (Great Sand Sea). You’ll picnic en route and continue to Lac Houidhate. Once at the camp, you’ll set up the tents and settle in. Enjoy a desert sunset (weather permitting), a traditional dinner, and share stories by the fire in the quiet of the desert night. (B,L,D)

New Year’s Eve in the Desert
After a relaxed breakfast, the day is yours: swim in the warm spring waters of Lac Houidhate or join a game of volleyball, football, or croquet in the soft desert sun. After lunch, explore the nearby dunes, and don’t forget to climb the highest dune for a sunset aperitif with fellow travelers. A freshly prepared dinner awaits at the camp, followed by an unforgettable evening around the fire, crowned with a spectacular fireworks display. No signal. No stress. Just magic. (B,L,D)

Through the Dunes to Douz
Wake up to the desert sunrise and enjoy breakfast before breaking down the camp and beginning the journey back. The route includes massive dunes and thrilling 100-meter downhill rides. After a picnic lunch, you’ll cross El Jbil National Park and reach the oasis town of Douz. That hot shower will feel amazing! (B,L,D)

With the Berbers
From Douz, you’ll travel to Tamazret, where you can (optionally) go on a camel ride or quad tour (payable on-site). Alternatively, visit the Amazigh Museum for insights into the rich local heritage. In Matmata, explore the troglodyte houses dug into the ground for protection and climate control. Then continue to the beautifully located village of Toujane, famous for stone houses and handmade carpets. After a village walk, head to Ksar Hadada – a former granary and Star Wars filming location. Explore the maze-like architecture before arriving back at your hotel in Djerba. (B,L,D)

Return Home
Free time until check-out (12:00); luggage can be stored. Late afternoon transfer to Djerba Airport (approx. 40 min) and flight back to Luxembourg (Luxair, 19:50–22:50). (B)

EU citizens need a passport valid at least six months beyond the return date. For dual nationals (EU/Tunisian), the Tunisian passport is also required.
Desert Tour (29.12–02.01):
Only one backpack (max. 70L) per person is allowed. At Lake Houidhate, there are no fixed sanitation facilities, but there will be toilet paper, wash water, and a portable hand-wash station. Tents, sleeping bags, air mattresses, tables, and chairs are provided. Bring: pillow, flashlight, warm nightwear, sun protection, power bank, and sturdy shoes.
Please note: No alcohol is served or sold in the desert camps. You may bring your own. Drivers can stop at a shop in Djerba upon request before the desert tour.
Wi-Fi is available in most hotels but limited. At Camp Abdelmoula, Wi-Fi is available (at extra cost); there is no coverage in the desert or at Lake Houidhate.

Flight prices are based on special tour operator fares and subject to availability. In case of hotel unavailability, a similar alternative will be arranged.
Travel insurance is not included. We strongly recommend purchasing travel cancellation insurance including COVID-19 coverage, as well as international health insurance that includes COVID-related treatment or quarantine.
This trip is not suitable for guests with back problems or limited mobility. Please inform us in advance if you have special needs.
